Tennis Racket Size Chart

Find the right racket length for a child, or the head size, weight, balance, grip size and string tension that suit an adult’s level and swing.

Units

Measure from the middle crease of your palm to the tip of your ring finger.

–Racket length
–String tension
–Grip size

Lower tension gives more power and comfort; higher tension gives more control. Drop 1–2 kg (2–4 lb) for polyester strings; with elbow or arm pain choose lower tension and a multifilament.

If you are between sizes, take the smaller one; an overgrip adds about half a size.

Junior racket lengths

Children are sized by height, not age: 19″ under about 100 cm (3′3″), 21″ at 100–118 cm, 23″ at 118–132 cm, 25″ at 132–145 cm and 26″ at 145–155 cm; most players move to an adult 27″ racket around 155 cm or age 12–14. With the arm hanging relaxed at the side, the racket tip should not touch the ground. Pair the racket with the right ITF ball stage: red, orange or green.

Head size, weight and balance

Beginners benefit from an oversize head of 102–110 sq in and a light 255–280 g frame, even or slightly head-heavy for easy power. Intermediates usually play 98–102 sq in at 280–300 g. Advanced players with long, fast swings choose 95–100 sq in, 300–320 g and a head-light balance for control and manoeuvrability. A short, compact swing benefits from a bigger, more powerful head.

Grip size and string tension

Grip sizes run L0 (4″) to L5 (4⅝″) in ⅛″ steps; in Europe the same sizes are 0–5. Measure from the middle palm crease to the ring finger tip; between sizes, take the smaller one and add an overgrip. Most rackets are strung at 22–26 kg (48–57 lb). Lower tension gives more power and comfort, higher tension more control. Drop 1–2 kg (2–4 lb) for polyester strings, and choose a soft multifilament at lower tension if you have tennis elbow.

Frequently asked questions

What size tennis racket for a 7-year-old?

Usually a 23″ racket, which fits children about 118–132 cm tall; a small 7-year-old may still need a 21″.

How do I measure my tennis grip size?

Measure from the middle crease of your palm to the tip of your ring finger. About 4¼″ is L2, 4⅜″ L3 and 4½″ L4.

What string tension should I use?

Start in the middle of the racket’s recommended range, typically 23–25 kg (50–55 lb). Go lower for more power and comfort or with polyester strings, higher for more control.

An oversize head of about 102–110 sq in gives a bigger sweet spot and easy power, which helps while you develop your stroke.
