A console, a few controllers, snacks and an argument about who is actually best: that is how most EA SPORTS FC tournaments start, whether it is a student-house night in Leeds, a basement in Ohio or an office league at lunch. What makes the night work is less the game than the organisation: who plays whom, how long it lasts, and how a drawn knockout game gets settled. This guide walks you through planning an FC tournament from format choice to prize split.
Before you start: game, consoles and time
The current title, EA SPORTS FC 27, launched on 25 September 2026 for PS5, PS4, Xbox, PC and Nintendo Switch. For a friends’ tournament, Kick Off mode is usually all you need: half length, difficulty and game speed are set in Match Settings. The game has its own tournament mode too, but keeping fixtures and the table outside the game is far more flexible when you have more than one console.
Answer three questions first:
- How many players? 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16 are the easiest numbers.
- How many consoles and screens? That sets how many games run at once.
- How long? One evening, a weekend, or a league over several weeks?
Those answers almost pick the format for you. The gaming tournament generator builds fixtures and the table once you enter players and choose a format.
Formats and match-count formulas
| Format | Matches (n players) | 8 players | 16 players | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single round robin | n(n−1)/2 | 28 | 120 | Few players, lots of time |
| Double round robin | n(n−1) | 56 | 240 | Weekly league |
| Single elimination | n−1 | 7 | 15 | Short night, power-of-two field |
| Groups + knockout | group games + knockout | — | 24 + 7 = 31 | 12–32 players, World Cup feel |
| Swiss system | (n/2) × rounds | 3 rounds: 12 | 4 rounds: 32 | Big field, everyone plays a lot |
League (round robin)
Everyone plays everyone; it is the fairest format. Matches = n(n−1)/2: 6 players gives 6 × 5 ÷ 2 = 15, 8 players gives 8 × 7 ÷ 2 = 28. With an odd number of players, one person sits out (a bye) each round. Let the league schedule generator write the fixture list.
Knockout (single elimination)
Lose and you are out. Matches are always n−1, because everyone except the champion is eliminated exactly once. 8 players: 4 quarter-finals + 2 semis + 1 final = 7. If the field is not a power of two (say 10), give byes to the top seeds in round one. The downside: whoever loses first spends the night watching. The tournament bracket generator handles byes and seeding for you.
Groups + knockout
16 players in four groups of four: each group plays 4 × 3 ÷ 2 = 6 games, 24 in total. The top two of each group reach the quarter-finals: 4 + 2 + 1 = 7 games. Total 31 matches. To keep the strongest players apart, use pots, as explained in our guide to how tournament draws and seeding work.
Swiss system
Each round pairs players on similar scores; nobody is eliminated. For a clear winner you need about log₂(n) rounds: 16 players → 4 rounds of 8 games = 32 matches. Borrowed from chess, it gives everyone in a big field the same number of games.
Time planning: a worked example
With six-minute halves, one match plus half-time, replays and controller swaps takes roughly a 20-minute slot.
- 8 players, single round robin, 1 console: 28 × 20 = 560 min ≈ 9 h 20 min. Too long for one night.
- Same league, 2 consoles: 14 slots × 20 = 280 min ≈ 4 h 40 min.
- 8-player knockout, 1 console: 7 × 20 = 140 min ≈ 2 h 20 min (add ~20 min for extra time and penalties).
- 16 players, groups + knockout, 2 consoles: 31 games ≈ 16 slots × 20 = 320 min ≈ 5 h 20 min.
Add a 15–20% buffer: someone is always late, a controller always dies and someone always demands a rematch.
Picking teams: random draw and balance
“Everyone picks Real Madrid” gets old fast. Three common approaches:
- Random club draw: each player gets a random club. The random club picker filters by star rating so nobody ends up with a two-star side.
- Star cap: for example only 4 to 4.5-star clubs. The fairest option for mixed-ability groups.
- Handicap: the favourite plays with a 4-star club, the weakest player with a 5-star club.
Themed nights work well too: Premier League only, MLS only, or Champions League clubs only. Decide in advance whether two players may use the same club.
The rules sheet: write it before kick-off
Most arguments happen because nobody wrote the rules down. A short list:
- Half length: 6 minutes (4–5 for long leagues).
- Settings: same difficulty and game speed for all; default Kick Off settings cause the fewest disputes.
- Controllers: bring your own and keep your settings; borrowed pads are checked before kick-off.
- Pausing: only when the ball is out of play, and only for subs or tactics.
- Knockout draws: if your match type allows extra time and penalties, use both; if not, go straight to penalties or a golden-goal replay. Choose before the bracket starts.
- Disconnects (online): before the 10th in-game minute → restart. After that → replay the remaining time at the same score, or the score stands. A deliberate quit is a forfeit (e.g. 3–0).
- No-shows: more than 15 minutes late is a forfeit.
Tie-breakers
In leagues and groups a win is 3 points, a draw 1, a loss 0. Write the tie-break order down in advance. Pro leagues differ: the Premier League uses goal difference first, while UEFA competitions look at head-to-head first. Our league tiebreakers guide compares them. A sensible order for friends:
- Points
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Head-to-head result
- Still level: a one-off decider or a penalty shootout
Enter results as you go and let the league table generator keep the standings.
Splitting a prize pool
If everyone chips in, announce the split before the first game. Example: 8 players × $20 = $160.
| Split | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 / 30 / 10 | $96 | $48 | $16 | $160 |
| 50 / 30 / 20 | $80 | $48 | $32 | $160 |
| 70 / 30 | $112 | $48 | — | $160 |
The same in the UK with £10 each: £80 split 60/30/10 is £48 / £24 / £8. With only 4–6 players, paying the top two is enough. Take shared costs (pizza, venue) out of the pot first, then apply the percentages. A trophy, a dinner or “loser buys the next round” works just as well as cash. Beyond small friendly stakes, check local rules before running an open tournament with cash prizes.
